about

This song is Jacob Johnson's fault. He purchased a book from a bookstore in St. Augustine, FL about the pirate, Major Stede Bonnet, thinking that Gray Lee would enjoy reading it. He presented Gray with the book, saying something along the lines of, "Maybe you'll find some inspiration in it for another pirate song." The next day, Jacob received this recording - which is a summary of the entire account in song.

lyrics

Major Bonnet had no head for pirating,
But he had money and sometimes that will do,
He fled his fine mansion to live on the sea,
‘Til he was mutiny’d by his crew,
They chose a new captain named Edward Teach,
Bold and daring to the last degree,
And out of all of their company,
He was far superior in roguery,

Amen, Amen
Let the fog come rolling in,
Amen Amen,
Let the sea be free again,
Put me aboard your fastest ship,
Sail me away from The Queen Anne’s Revenge.

He sailed off St. Vincent with forty guns,
In a ship he had christened The Queen Anne’s Revenge,
They captured and plundered Cpt. Christopher Taylor,
And set ashore all of his men,
On the 5th of April 1718,
10 leagues short of the Honduras bay,
They took the ship, called the Adventure,
Up with their colors and they sailed away,

Amen, Amen
Let the fog come rolling in,
Amen Amen,
Let the sea be free again,
Put me aboard your fastest ship,
Sail me away from the Queen Anne’s Revenge.
O Captain, O Captain,
Please tell your men,
To sail me away from The Queen Anne’s Revenge,

Burning ships, they sailed for Jamacia,
Plunderin’ sloops along their wicked way,
They took some pinks and brigantine,
And laid off the bar of Charles Town for five or six days,
So Blackbeard being in want of medicines,
Blockaded the harbor, his iron first tight,
And the Province of Caroline hid in their houses,
For pirates were walkin’ their streets at night.

Amen, Amen
Let the fog come rolling in,
Amen Amen,
Let the sea be free again,
Put me aboard your fastest ship,
Sail me away from the Queen Anne’s Revenge.
O Captain, O Captain,
Please tell your men,
To sail me away from The Queen Anne’s Revenge,
